The places that used nationalism  outside of the nation states included Latin America, China, and India, and the pan movements. One way the nationalism was used by Latin America was the idea of mixing race. The idea was to incorporate whites in to Latin America to uplift people of color such as Indians, blacks, and mixed because the rank of society was higher when you were more whiter. The mixture however did not work out well it was not easy to be a homogeneous nation, but by celebrating the past and creating myths it would help the idea to succeed. Mexicans for an example, combined Aztech and Spanish Catholic origins to create the concept of nationalism.

China decided to do the same as Latin America and celebrate the history of Chinese culture to create the concept of nationalism. Race was used to the Han Chinese roots and a combination of traditions to ensure nationalism. The ideas of nationalism was by Sun Yat-sen but was not fully accepted at first by China. By the second half of the nineteenth century its was more acceptable and incorporated into the studying abroad with programs in China. China is then reconstituted and the race ideas of Sun are put in place.

India, like Latin America followed suit and went to the past and histories to create nationalism when it comes to the identity of Indians. To say that India was unified by religion was not as it seemed, Different ideas of reglion, science, and medicine was an issue for the idea of nationalism. A response to this issue was to create the Pan-Movements were it put people that have the same ethnicity or even religion would be linked. The Pan- Movements included Asianism, Islamism, African, Slavism, Turkism, Arabism, Germanism,  and Zionism.

Nationalism can be defined as supporting the nation’s interests. In Africa, this meant ridding the nation of imperialism that Europeans defined as a “civilization mission” and African prophets had deemed as “supremacy.” Africans joined together and staged multiple revolts against the European conquest of land and its people which left them in situations of forced labor, increased taxes, and appropriated land. One of these notable revolts was the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa which lasted three years and cost Britain 20,000 soldiers and £200 million. Frustrated, Britain made the decision to cut off the soldiers of the revolution from their motivation, the people. They made the decision to put men, women, and children into concentration camps, at one pointtotalling over 155,000 people. This squashed the revolts once and for all in South Africa. Like Africa, China also pushed against European interference with their culture. They heavily pushed against Christianity. The revolt became known as the Boxer Uprising and began with the poorest members of society, the peasants. After the Taiping Rebellion, Christian missionaries had poured into China looking to convert as many people as possible. When Chinese residents killed two German missionaries in 1897, Germans demanded the right to construct three cathedrals, remove hostile local officials, and assume control of the Jiaozhou port. This led to an increase in tensions and further attacks on missionaries and their religious buildings. The Boxer movement gained momentum where there was hardship, natural disasters and poor economic conditions. The victims of hard times found support in the Boxers’ claim that the gods were angry over the foreign presence and Christianity. Women also joined in the movement alongside men to challenge the Christian ideals. Eventually, the Qing dynasty could no longer ignore or control the Boxer movement and declared war against foreign powers. The attempt was squashed and left China vulnerable to western powers. These two countries fought against the strong presence of Europe and western ideals but ultimately were just stepping stones on the way to Britain’s global control and power.
